ignorance is blissI absolutely love this. It’s real. It’s a simple cartoon that explains the truth.
The things that Black people (or any minority) have tend to get “whitened.”
Very few notes, because only some very bold white people would actually reblog.
Yes, learning about this right now in my global societies class.
Let’s just discuss how fucking accurate this is, shall we?
“History is written by the victors” - attributed to Winston Churchill
“History is actually a long series of centuries of men writing down what they thought was important and interesting, and FORGETTING TO WRITE ABOUT WOMEN.” -
Great. Check. Got it. But god DAMN it history is also whitewashed as FUCK.
What is whitewashing, you ask?
whitewashing present participle of white·wash (Verb)
VerbWe are very obviously look at the second definition - which is fucked because why the Hell is it definition #2?
- Paint (a wall, building, or room) with whitewash.
- Try to clear (someone or their name) by deliberately concealing their mistakes or faults.
Essentially, we’re discussing it as it applies to history ignoring, erasing, or editing the roles of POC.“History is all old dead white guys” people whine. “It’s boring.”History is NOT boring but people turning it into Wonder Bread and Mayo certainly is. And unfortunately that is exactly what centuries of cishet white males (hey, sorry to my cishet white male audience - I’m sure you’re personally lovely people but you’ve got a lot of privilege going on and people like you have skewed things towards other people like you for generations, and that’s just a fact; the quicker you acknowledge that and move on the quicker this explanation will make some impact #TruthHurts) have done.Reading a typical high school (or even college) textbook, you’d easily think that POC had no bearing on history. This is NOT FUCKING TRUE. POC were definitely there - fucking hell there was an entire goddamn WORLD beyond fucking Europe where things happened and massive changes went down…but you don’t fucking know about it because Western schools don’t teach it.It’s bullshit and it’s bad for you.The people writing the books didn’t give a fuck about POC. So they didn’t include them. POC are STILL considered “supplemental” studies in the field of history. Because the alleged “main” or “master copy” of history is about old dead fuckin’ white guys.Grendel will now assign you some homework. Read these:You think this isn’t a modern problem? You think we’re living in a post-racial society? We’re not. And The problem of whitewashing and erasure is only going to continue if we don’t stop it.Which is exactly why it’s up to the newer generation of historians to post-modernize the FUCK out of the field and change this stupid bullshit. It is essential that everyone who made history (i.e. everyone) be included in the retelling. So how is that going to happen? How can you help. CALL THEM ON IT. Make your blog posts, spread awareness, educate yourself. Speak up in class. Protest bullshit laws and attempts to squash POC history - like the one in Arizona. Research on your own and prove to people that this has value. Get your ass involved. Question fucking EVERYTHING. Argue! This is bullshit and you should always call bullshit by its name.Don’t stand for this garbage. Don’t let them bleach out your brain, and don’t put up with bleaching history.Ignorance is bliss?
Ignorance is bullshit.
On the topic of women in history, there’s a horrible environment in classrooms. Whenever women come up on a power point slide or on a worksheet, I cringe because I can sense a misogynistic joke coming. It makes me really uncomfortable and I’m so sick of male teachers being assholes. One day, I will call teachers out for it, but I’ll need to prepare so I don’t end up sounding like an idiot/cowering away.
Kudos to my 7th grade male social studies teacher for telling us to write to the writers/editors of our textbook to write more about women in history.
I didn’t think much of it at the time and largely ignored it, I recognize the implications of what he said. My brother has the same textbook now, so I might actually do it.

Heart goes out to the dead, injured, and others in Boston
but also my heart goes out to all the Muslims in the area who will wrongly be rounded up and detained tonight and to their families, and to the ones who will have to face mob violence and a spike of hatred that this event will trigger in the ignorant.

EVERYONE REBLOG THIS. SPREAD THIS AROUND.
Westboro is planning to picket the funerals of those whose lives were taken by the explosions in Boston. Remember what the bikers did for the funerals of the children who attended Sandy Hook Elementary? Let’s do that again. Don’t let Westboro spread their hate and ignorance.

im serious
if you are middle eastern or look like it or are just brown, people MAY target you today
especially if you wear hijab or any kind of traditional clothing
so please, please, please, stay safe. things like this have happened…
I would like to add on, If I may.
Yes. Bad things happen. It’s a fact. Horrendous and terrifying things occur in the world.
But it does no justice to only look at the bad.
Keep it in remembrance, yes. But do not let it leave a black mark on your memory / event.
Terrible things have happened. And terrible things will happen in the future.but do not let it skew your world.
Take a look at the aftermath of an event.
People are going out of their way to help.
Donating, giving, lending, saving, risking their own lives for a complete stranger.
Just because a terrible event has happen (and there are ‘bad’ people in the worth to have put forth such a thing), does not mean that there is no humanity left.
And I know it’s hard to see it in that way.
But give it time.
As always, my ask box is open.
